4. Heatmaps

Interacting with a heatmap

The heatmap can be moved and resized. Point one controller towards the heatmap and a laser pointer will appear, then press and hold the grip buttons on your controller to move the heatmap. To resize the heatmap, grab it with both controllers simultanously and move your controllers closer or further from eachother.
Point the laser pointer towards the gene list on the right hand side and the gene name pointed at will be highlighted. Pressing the trigger while pointing at a gene will colour the graphs according to that gene. Pointing the laser at the top bars will highlight the cells that are in that group or attribute. Pressing and holding down the trigger with the laser pointer pointed at a part of the heatmap allows you to make a box selection of a part of the heatmap. Let go of the trigger button to finilize the selection, point the laser at the box you selected and move the laser pointer to some other part of the heatmap to move the rows and columns that span your selection to another part of the heatmap. You do not have to select an entire row or column to move it, just at least one part of it. All rows and columns that are (at least partly) selected will be moved if you move the selection.

On the left side of the heatmap there is a couple of buttons. Use them with the laser tool. Read the functionality of each button below:

  • Reorder Bars - The heatmap will be reordered so that the cells in each group are ordered by their attribute. Cells of the same type will be next to eachother. Click the same button again and the heatmap will be reordered back to it's original order.
  • Create New Heatmap - After making a selection of some cells and some genes on the heatmap you can press the "Create new heatmap" button on the hatmap's left side. This will create a new heatmap with only the cells and genes you selected. The new heatmap will be colored using the lowest and highest expression of the genes in the cells you selected.
  • Save - Will save the heatmap as an image in the folder Output/<username>/<dataset>/Heatmap.
  • GO Analysis - Performs a gene ontology analysis which can then be saved in a report. The GO analysis can take a minute or two.
  • Recolour Graphs - Recolours the graphs to show where the groups came from.
